“Trip”: Solo Exhibition at Russo Lee Gallery
Approach | 2023
Portland-based artist Whitney Nye unveils her latest body of work, Trip, in a solo exhibition at Russo Lee Gallery from May 1 to May 31, 2025. This exhibition marks a significant milestone in Nye's artistic journey, showcasing a series of large-scale oil paintings that delve into themes of movement, perception, and the nuances of the human experience.
A Journey Through Layers and Narratives
The paintings in Trip unfold like a short story—rich, layered, and capable of standing alone or resonating as part of a larger narrative. Nye's approach involves building up each piece through multiple layers, often worked on simultaneously, creating a dynamic interplay of textures and forms. The scale of the works invites viewers into an immersive experience, encouraging them to engage closely and discover the subtle details embedded within each composition.
Nye describes her process as one of engrossing mark-making that may be imperceptible from afar but resonates upon closer inspection. This meticulous attention to detail reflects her dedication to both perseverance and joy in the creative process.
